An intravenous infusion of clonidine (1.5 m̈g/kg) was given to 22 healthy male volunteers to establish normal hormonal biochemical, cardiovascular and psychological responses. Control data were provided by 12 of these subjects who had additional saline infusions, and repeat clonidine infusions were carried out in six subjects to assess test–retest reliability. Clonidine infusion appears to be a safe, reproducible and acceptable means of assessing alpha‐2‐adrenoceptor function in man.
