Traditional corporate disciplinary systems often fail to encourage responsible employee behavior. This article presents “positive discipline” as a management tool for responding to individual employees' unacceptable behavior, while supporting the good performance of the majority. Positive discipline has been implemented at Union Carbide with successful results: constructive interaction with individual employee problems encourages employee self‐discipline and recommitment to the organization's goals.
