Successful introduction of strategically‐oriented compensation plans depends on their “fit” with the firm's overall approach to strategic planning. Proposed approaches to designing management compensation systems are examined in terms of their potential fit with three different mental models of strategy and the strategic planning process to develop a parallel typology of compensation plans.
