Individuals are not inclined to think of themselves as human capital in the workplace. Workers are uniquely different from other factors of production because they make choices. Workers' perspectives need to be considered in human resource development, and a model for training research with this viewpoint is presented here. One axis of the model describes the workers' agenda: worker autonomy, compensation, health, and worker‐environment fit. The other axis identifies influences on training outcomes that must be considered in any training research: identification of performance deficiencies, learning conditions, and worker commitment. The literature that supports this model is reviewed, and examples of research questions generated by the model are provided.
