This empirical examination of factors predicting team orientation within organizations used interviews, focus groups, and pencil‐and‐paper questionnaires to gather data in ten organizations. An examination of questionnaire data from 81 managers and 364 associates indicates that five factors provide the best prediction of high team orientation for an organization: relationships within organization‐wide management, innovation on the job, control of work by the immediate manager or supervisor, group cohesiveness, and open group process within the work group.
