The unconventional (5 S ,7 R ,8 S ,9 R ,10 S )‐configurated (−)‐7‐(acetyloxy)‐12,12‐dichloro‐8‐hydroxy‐13,14,15,16‐tetranorlabdan‐11‐one ( 2 ) was synthesized via the HCl‐promoted hydrolysis of (7 α )‐7,8‐(isopropylidenedioxy)‐14,15‐dinorlabdan‐11,13‐dione ( 5 ). Possible mechanistic pathways of the reaction are considered. Crystal and molecular structures of the isolated compound 2 were determined by single‐crystal X‐ray structure analysis.
