The four‐component reaction of dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate (=dimethyl but‐2‐ynedioate; DMAD), aromatic aldehydes, and malononitrile (=propanedinitrile) leads to polyfunctionalized 1,4‐dihydropyridine derivatives. The reaction proceeds at room temperature and in the presence of a catalytic amount (20%) of (NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 as a base in aqueous media.
