In the presence of an excess of cysteine, a catalytic amount of a non‐iron transition‐metal ion (Co 2+ , Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Ti 4+ , and Mn 2+ ) may also induce cleavage of qinghaosu (artemisinin; 1 ) to give those end products previously reported for Fe 2+ ‐mediated degradation.
