Natural irones found in the essential oil of Iris rhizomes often are mixtures of enantiomers. The separation of all optical isomers of the irones by GLC on modified cyclodextrins and the determination of their composition within different Iris oils is described. The significance for the biosynthesis of the cycloiridals, C 31 ‐triterpenoids, which serve as precursors of the irones, is discussed.
