Karpoxanthin and 6‐Epikarpoxanthin A tetrahydroxy‐β,β‐carotene previously isolated in minute amounts from ripe hips of Rosa pomifera was now identified as (3 S ,5 R ,6 R ,3′ R )‐5,6‐dihydro‐β,β‐carotene‐3,5,6,3′‐tetrol ( 2 ). Acid hydrolysis of (9Z)‐antheraxanthin ( 3 ) gave 2 and its C(6)‐epimer 4 . Tetrol 2 is named karpoxanthin.
