Mechanism of the Decarboxylative Dimerization of Maleic Anhydride to Dimethylmaleic Anhydride under the Influence of 2‐Aminopyridine The mechanism of the decarboxylative dimerization of maleic anhydride to dimethylmaleic anhydride was investigated. It was shwon that imidazo[1,2‐ a ] pyridines play an important role as intermediates in this rather unusual transformation, the key step being a Michael addition of 5 to maleic anhydride.
