Dimethylformamide exchange on [Er(DMF) 8 ] 3+ is shown to take place via two competing dissociative‐type mechanisms: D and I d . It is concluded that a mechanistic crossover occurs along the series Tb‐Yb and this behaviour is contrasted with the changeover observed for the solvent exchange on the first‐row transition metal ions.
