The title compound (C 12 H 12 O 2 ) crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P 2 1 /c. The structure was solved by direct methods, and the positions of all the hydrogen atoms were obtained from a difference synthesis. The final Rω was 0.04. Current MO theories of the interaction of unsaturated groups with small ring systems are consistent with the bond length variations encountered in the present substituted bicyclo[2.1.0]pentane skeleton with respect to the unsubstituted hydrocarbon.
