A simplified high‐yield preparation of end‐labelled potassium azide from K 15 NO 3 is described. Treatment of 4‐chloropyrimidines with K 15 NN 2 and subsequent gas‐phase pyrolysis gives ring‐labelled 1‐cyanoimidazoles in 80–100% yields. The cyano‐groups in the latter are easily removed by hydrolysis.
