Photooxygenation of β‐damascenone ( 1 ) leads to the 3,6‐ endo ‐peroxide ( 2 ) which has been converted to various oxygenated derivatives in the damascene series. Introduction of oxygen specifically into the 2‐position of β‐damascenone ( 1 ) occurs by selenium dioxide oxidation. A series of reduction products of 2‐oxo‐β‐damascone ( 9 ) is described.
