UV./VIS.‐, ORD.‐, CD.‐ and fluorescence spectra of the drosopterins are discussed on the basis of the proposed structure 1 . The drosopterins show 4 pK‐values in the normal pH range and are relatively basic compounds as can be seen from electrofocussing and electrophoresis experiments. Solvatochromic effects are in agreement with the merocyanine character of the pigments. Polarographic studies revealed two twoelectron waves of reduction as expected from the structure.
