The electron impact induced fragmentation of trans cyclopentane‐1, 2‐diol has been investigated using derivatives specifically labelled with deuterium and high‐resolution mass spectral data. The elimination of the elements of water from the molecular ion involves at least three mechanisms whose relative importance has been evaluated. A fragmentation scheme based upon metastable peaks and labelling is presented.
