Energetic coupling of oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria is discussed in the light of recent findings concerning mediation of alkali cation transport by antibiotics: Decoupling by cation‐specific antibiotics of the valinomycin group, as well as by classical decoupling agents ( e.g. 2,4‐dinitrophenol), can easily be interpreted on the basis of their known molecular properties if Mitchell's chemi‐osmotic theory is accepted. «Ion pump» mechanisms, as proposed by several authors, require additional assumptions that do not seem justified.
