The absolute direction of transition moments and the change of the dipole moment upon transition to excited states of acenaphthylene are determined from the influence of an electric field on the optical density of a solution. The results agree well with predictions from PPP‐calculations. In the lowest excited state the dipole moment is antiparallel to the ground state dipole moment.
