The action of methylthiomethylene‐triphenylphosphorane on 2,3: 4,5‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐ Aldehydo ‐‐L‐arabinose led with good yield to the corresponding unsaturated sugar which underwent electrophilic addition with a high regiospecificity. This provides a useful new route for a one‐carbon chain extension in the carbohydrate series.
