(Alkoxycarbonyl‐chloroacetyl‐methylene)‐phosphoranes dealkylate in the presence of acids and give the very stable lactone‐betaine IV. The mechanism of this reaction is tentatively compared to other known dealkylations catalysed by protons or quaternary phosphonium compounds.
