The reaction of methyl chloride and methyl bromide with white phosphorus is studied under a variety of conditions, and the conditions giving a high yield of tetramethylphosphonium chloride and bromide are established. Thermal decomposition of [(CH 3 ) 4 P]+Cl − gives (CH 3 ) 3 P and CH 3 Cl, and alkaline decomposition of [(C 4 H 9 ) 3 (C 12 H 25 )P]+Cl− gives C 4 H 10 and (C 4 H 9 ) 2 (C 12 H 25 )PO.
