Only under very restrictive conditions can the non‐equilibrium thermodynamic theories of dissipative processes in continuous media be applied to a description of dyeing systems. A primary restriction results from the complex physico‐chemical nature of fibrous polymers. Under certain conditions, the assumption that a textile substrate may be regarded as a water‐swollen, isotropic gel is possible, and circumvents this restriction.
