The non‐enzymatic hydroxylation of phenylalanine to tyrosine has been effected by atmospheric oxygen in aqueous solution in the presence of 5,6,7,8‐tetrahydropterines, Fe II or Fe III , and EDTA, in a phosphate buffer at pH 6,9. A possible reaction mechanism is discussed.
