In the course of the decomposition of triphenylphosphonium nitrate, the adduct of two molecules of phenol with one molecule of benzoquinone was isolated in small yields. The benzoquinone is probably produced by radical oxidation of phenol by nitrogen pentoxide, itself produced by reaction between nitrate ions and the quasiphosphonium nitrate, postulated as an intermediate in the main reaction leading to a mixture of o ‐ and p ‐nitrophenols.
