The oxocarbonium ion [RCO] + is shown to be present in CH 2 Cl 2 solutions of the addition compounds between benzoic and mesitoic acid or their chlorides, and five L EWIS acids: TiCl 4 , AlCl 3 , SbCl 5 , SbF 5 and H 2 SO 4 (H + ). In CH 2 Cl 2 solutions of the addition compound 2,4,6‐(CH 3 ) 3 ‐C 6 H 2 COOH, AlCl 3 the existence of the mesitoylium ion has been confirmed by infrared and ultraviolet spectra and by nuclear magnetic resonance.
