5‐hydroxyindane and 6‐hydroxytetralin and their respective anions have been investigated by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The results indicate that by forming the anion of 5‐hydroxyindane, the increase of electron density is the greatest at position 6, in agreement with its abnormal reactivity (Mills‐Nixon effect [2]).
