The NMR.‐spectra of pure cis ‐ and trans ‐2‐methylcyclohexylidene acetic acids are interpreted with the aid of the double resonance method. These results lead to the correct interpretation of many signals in the NMR.‐spectrum of cassaic acid methylester and therefore to the determination of its side chain configuration as well as to the verification of the axial position of its secondary methyl group. The configuration of the Erythrophleum alkaloid cassain (I) is now completely established by this evidence.
