Complex formation between vanadyl(IV) ion and Tiron, and sulfosalicylic acid respectively, has been investigated by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (e.p.r.) and optical spectroscopy. The 1:1‐ and 1:2‐complexes are distinguishable by the position of the absorption maxima in the optical absorption spectrum as well as by the parameters of the e.p.r. spectrum. There is no evidence for the existence of stable hydroxo‐complexes. The influence of the ligands on the vanadium nuclear hyperfine splitting constant in the e.p.r. spectrum is discussed in terms of spin polarization.
