The kinetics and the mechanism of the Fe 2+ catalysed autoxidation of a chelate forming formazyl derivative have been studied. Inhibition by CN − suggests formation of a ternary complex with O 2 as a reactive intermediate in which oxidation takes place via electron transfer without formation of an iron(III)‐compound. The Fe 2+ keeps the reactants in a favourable position and provides suitable orbitals for the electron transfer from the ligand to the O 2 ‐molecule.
