Acidity constants of 2‐carbethoxy‐3‐hydroxy‐5‐R‐thiophenes (R H, CH 3 , phenyl, p ‐biphenylyl, α‐naphtyl) and of 3‐carbethoxy‐4‐hydroxy‐2‐R‐thiophenes (R H, CH 3 , phenyl) and stability constants of their complexes with some divalent metal ions have been determined. The stability of the chelates is discussed as a function of the respective bond orders of the α–β and β–β′ bonds of the thiophene ring.
