The infrared spectra between 670 and 4000 cm −1 of Me II SO 4 ·1H 2 O (Me II = Ni, Mg, Co, Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu), Me II SeO 4 ·1H 2 O (Me II = Co and Zn) and a number of the corresponding D 2 O compounds are measured and discussed. The results are in good agreement with the crystal structure data and with measurements of the proton magnetic resonance. It must be concluded that the proposed formulations MeH 2 SO 5 or Me(OH)SO 4 H are wrong. The compounds contain really a strongly bounded water molecule, and the present results give a sufficient explanation for the remarkable thermal stability of these hydrates.
