In contrast to the light‐induced formation of 11,19‐t‐cyclobutanol derivatives from 11‐oxo‐pregnanes, the saturated 11‐oxo‐C‐nor‐pregnane 5 is converted rapidly and quantitatively into the unsaturated aldehyde 6 upon ultraviolet irradiation in solution. The isomerization is independent of the nature of the solvent and is largely unaffected by the presence of molecular oxygen.
