The ketolactone C 12 H 16 O 3 discovered by N AVES & G RAMPOLOFF [3] in 1942 in an Italian jasmine oil is shown to be the lactone IV of 2‐(5‐hydroxy‐ cis ‐pent‐2‐enyl)‐3‐oxo‐cyclopentylacetic or 5′‐hydroxy‐jasmonic acid (V ). Contrary to the findings of N AVES & G RAMPOLOFF , this hydroxy‐acid does not lactonize spontaneously, and the ketolactone IV has no odour.
