Aqueous solutions of the two dyestuffs orange‐8 and orange‐II have been investigated by means of osmometry, spectroscopy, viscometry and response to a sodium ion specific electrode. The results indicate that orange‐8 solutions contain mainly monomeric anions of the dye, even in concentrations near the limit of solubility, while solutions of orange‐I1 in concentrations above about 10 −2 mole/liter contain mainly dimeric anions. The behaviour of orange‐8 can best be described as that of a typical strong 1:1 electrolyte.
