The presence of 19 cardenolides (G, H, J, K, L 1 L 2 L 3 M 1 , M 2 M 3 M 4 M 5 , O, P 1 , P 2 , Q 1 , Q 2 , Q 3 and R) could be traced in the water‐soluble parts obtained after fermentation from the seeds of Stropkalzthus vartderijstii S TANER . Eight of these (G, H, J, K, L 1 , L 2 , L 3 and M 1 ) could be isolated in crystal line form, and two (O and P 2 ) in amorphous but homogeneous form, according to paper chromatography. P 2 M 2 and M 3 were obtained as crystalline O‐acetyl derivatives. The presence of M 4 M 5 and of three components in the Q group became evident only after degradation reactions.
