During work on the total synthesis of novobiocin, epi ‐noviose (5,5‐di‐C‐methyl‐4‐O‐methyl‐ L ‐xylose), which can be epimerized by alkali to noviose, has been obtained in 15 steps from D ‐glucose. The oxidation of aldehydic carbohydrates to the corresponding lactones can be carried out by means of bromocarbamide (prepared from bromine and urea) in diluted alcohol.
