The catalysis by benzoic acid of the reaction between carbethoxymethylene‐tri‐phenylphosphorane and benzaldehyde, reported by KUCHARDT et al. for benzenic solutions, is reduced by changing the solvent from benzene to chloroform, and by increasing the temperature. These observations are interpreted by specific hydrogen bonding in the transition state, which also explains the lower activation energy of the reaction in chloroform.
