Lankamycin is a new macrolide antibiotic composed of the aglycone, mono‐acetyllankolide (V), and two deoxysugars, lankavose (= chalcose, 11) and 4‐0‐acetylarcanose (111, K = H, R′ = CH,CO). Structure I for lankamycin has been determined by chemical degradation and NMR. investigations. The lactone moiety of the aglycone is biogenetically derived from 7 propionate and 1 acetate units.
