The synthesis is described of the monoethyl ester chlorides of ( S )‐ and ( R )‐methyl benzyloxy malonic acid which are intermediates in the synthesis of ergotamine. Their absolute configuration was determined by linking the levorotatory antipode with S ‐(+)‐citramalic acid.
