1. Uric acid was isolated from larvae of Drosophda melanogaster to which glucose‐[1‐ 14 C] and glu∼ose‐[6‐ 14 C] had been fed. The specific activity of the atoms 2 and 8 of the purine skeleton was considerably higher after feeding glucose‐ [6–14C] than after glucose‐ [1‐ 14 C]. The activated formate used in building the purine ring probably derives from the C 3 of glyceric acid (glycerate → hydroxypyruvate → serine).
