The biogenesis of acetomycin (I), a metabolic product of Streptomyces ramulosus , E TTLINGER et al. , has been investigated by adding specifically labeled radioactive precursors to the culture media of the microorganism. The distribution of the radioactivity has been determined by degradation according to flow sheet I. It is found that C‐1, C‐5 and C‐9 arise from the carboxylate carbon, and C‐2, C‐6, and C‐10 from the methyl carbon of the acetate ion. The methyl group C‐7 is transferred from Id‐methionin. The remaining carbon atoms C‐3, C‐4, and C‐8 originate from an unknown precursor that is a degradation product of D‐glucose.
