The oxidation of 1‐hydrazinophthalazine (AH) by Fe 3+ has been studied. In the primary electron exchange reaction a free radical A is formed which, in the presence of a large excess of Fe 2+ , forms a deep blue complex FeA 2+ . At high [Fe 3+ ] A is rapidly oxidized to phthalazine and N 2 . In acid solution at pH < 2 the radical ion AH + is stable for a longer period of time.
