1 The preparation of 1–5 mm thick layers of adsorbent for preparative thin layer chromatography is described. 2 The conditions of separation on Kieselgel G in relation to layer thickness, shape of spots and loading capacity have been examined. 3 Optimum conditions have been found in layer thicknesses of 1–3 mm, whereby the loading capacity of Kieselgel G per substance lies at approximately 5–25 mg/mm layer thickness for a 20 × 20 cm plate. 4 The application for the preparative separation of dye mixtures by means of ascending chromatography and horizontal overflow chromatography is described.
