Kinetic studies on the synthesis of calcium nitrate from calcium oxide and nitrous gases between 360 and 470°C have shown that this is a first order reaction in relation to the nitrogen dioxide concentration. From the temperature effect on the reaction rate constant k ′, which follows the rule of Arrhenius, the activation energy has been determined. The progress of the reaction with time was measured with powders, grains of different sizes and tablets. The relation between combustion temperature, internal surface, reaction rate and degree of reaction has been clarified using quicklime calcined at different temperatures.
