Benzoyl chloride and AlC1 3 give an addition compound with a dative oxygenaluminium bond. The F RIEDEL‐CRAFTS synthesis of benzophenone from benzoyl chloride and benzene in the presence of Al 36 C1 3 is shown by the authors to give rise to a statistical repartition of the radioactive chlorine between the HC1 evolved and the addition compound of benzophenone and AlCl 3 .
