A mechanism for the thermal decomposition of 2,3,4a,9a‐tetrahalogeno‐l, 2,3,4, 4a, 9a‐hexahydro‐anthraquinones is presented, which accounts for the production of mainly anthraquinone in the decomposition of the tetrabromo derivative, of mainly 2‐chloroanthraquinone in the decomposition of the tetrachloro derivative, and of mixtures of anthraquinone and 2‐halogenoanthraquinone from the thermolysis of mixed dibromo‐dichloro‐hexahydroanthraquinones.
