The kinetics of exchange of protons in 1‐ and 3‐positions of the azulene molecule with heavy water in the gaseous phase at 140° C has been investigated. In the presence of large excess of heavy water the kinetics follows a simple two stage, first order reaction scheme, for which the rate constants have been measured. The hitherto unknown azulene‐d 1 isotope has been observed spectroscopically and shown to be involved in the reaction as an intermediate d o → d 1 → d 2 , with kinetically approximatively equivalent 1‐ and 3‐positions.
