The solvent dependence of the frequencies of infrared absorption bands in the 1700–1600 cm −l region is used to identify the carbonyl stretching band of certain tropones. For tropone, 4,5‐benzotropone and 4,5‐(2′,3′‐naphtho)‐tropone the carbonyl stretching band is found to lie at lower frequencies (ca. 1600 cm −1 ) than the carbon‐carbon stretching frequencies. It is confirmed that whereas for 2,7‐polymethylene‐4,5‐benzotropones the carbon‐carbon stretching frequency lies at ca. 1620 cm −l , the carbonyl frequency decreases from ca. 1700 to ca. 1600 cm −l as the polymethylene chain increases in length, and occurs below the former for compounds with more than nine methylene groups.
