The optimization of the distribution of residence times for ideal, isothermal, stirred‐tank reactor cascades in the steady state is examined. By means of the method of dynamic programming it is shown that the optimal policy of such a cascade is uniform for a system involving any combination of first order reactions, thus forming a principle for a whole class of optimization problems. The values of the optimum residence time and of the corresponding maximum yield can be calculated with the given formulas if the rate constants are known.
